Chess on a hexagon, where nothing is ever captured. Every piece that leaves the board is bumped off it.

BumpHex Challenge is a strategy board game for two to six armies. Each army is twelve pieces: six porters that step forward one hex at a time, and six guests, each one a different piece that moves its own way.

Pieces walk, so a crowded board blocks them. Working out who can still reach where is the game.

The bump

A piece always lands on an empty hex — you never move onto anybody. But every enemy piece touching the hex you land on is shoved one hex straight away from you. Shoved off the edge, it is gone. Shoved into another piece, both are gone, whoever they belong to. Your own pieces never move.

Seven kinds of piece

A porter steps one hex forward. One guest walks exactly two hexes; one leaps two in a straight line over whatever is in the way, the only piece nothing can block; one runs three, must turn a corner, and runs three more; one slides up to six down a single line; one steers up to three, turning at every step; and one steps a single hex in any direction, but its bump shoves two.

Four ways to win

Race Home: reach the far side and the piece is safe in your score pile. Knockout: last army standing. Crowns: a porter that reaches the far side is promoted. King of the Hex: hold the centre hex for three of your turns in a row. Add Double Bump, or Crumble, where the edge of the board falls away as the game goes on. And one rest rule: never the same piece two turns running, unless it is the only one that can move.

Play it your way

Against the computer, pass and play round one phone or tablet, or with friends on the same Wi-Fi or over the internet with a four-letter room code. Two to six armies, on hexagonal boards sized for the number of players.

The plain facts

Where to get it
Coming soon to Google Play and the App Store.
What it costs
Free to download. No adverts of any kind, ever, and no account. Joining a game somebody else hosts is always free; one purchase, once, lets you host, and opens every board and pass and play for three to six people.
Who it is for
Players 13 and up who like chess and abstract strategy.
What it collects
Nothing about you — no accounts, no ads, no analytics. On one device it opens no connection at all. Playing with other people sends the moves to them: device to device on your own Wi-Fi, or through a relay we run that forwards the game and keeps none of it.
